Winter Sports Tryout/Practice Information

23 Nov 2020 by Michael Krulfeld

Students wishing to tryout or participate on any team must be enrolled in five credit-bearing classes this semester and have passed five last semester (9th graders are deemed eligible based if they are enrolled in five classes and past grades have no impact). In addition, students must have a valid VHSL physical on file in the Yorktown activities office dated after May 1, 2020. The correct form includes the APS Co-Curricular Participation Agreement and can be found here – https://tinyurl.com/y27dcu6z Please email the form prior to tryouts to yhsphysicals@apsva.us or mail to Yorktown High School.

The following information is available about the first day meetings for each sport. Please note, this year features a very condensed season and all students should be at the first day of tryouts. Absences without prior notice will be looked at very unfavorably since tryout time frames will be significantly condensed compared to usual.

We are bound by capacity constraints in different facilities which necessitates that students sign up for tryout sessions for specific sports in order to attend. Such restrictions are noted below.

Students should note the following:

Each student must bring their own filled water bottle(s) with enough water for practice
Students must have a VHSL physical on file prior to the start of tryouts but preferably by November 30 in order to allow for processing and to insure students can participate on day one

Students will have their temperature checked and will undergo a screening for COVID symptoms

Students should NOT report earlier than 15 minutes before the stated time and should report to the stated location.

Students must wear a mask at all times except when approved by the coach (typically during physical exertion) – neck gators and tshirt or other non-traditional masks are not allowed by APS

Students are encouraged not to carpool and risk unnecessary interaction with other students so as to minimize the possible spread of COVID

Swim/Dive – While we intend to once again welcome everyone who is interested onto the swim team, slots in the pool will be significantly limited this year – both for practices and meets. We can not guarantee students will swim in all meets nor will students be able to practice daily due to APS pool and health department restrictions. Any student interested in swimming or diving must join our google classroom using code: go4r5w3 and complete the athlete registration form to be added to the roster. We will have an information zoom call on Monday 11/30 to explain the practice registration process, so be sure to register by then to get further information. Information will be distributed via Team App and email only – parents and athletes should join the Swim and Dive Team App. Students will sign up for 1-3 slots a week depending on availability. Practice times will be 3:30-4:15 and 4:15-5 with arrival 15 minutes prior to start time. Each session will be limited to 24 swimmers and 10 divers. Swim/dive begins on Monday, December 14.

Track – All track practices and meets will be held outside this winter with the exception of high jump practice once a week in the aux gym. Rifle – Due to limited space at the practice and match ranges, only students with prior experience will be allowed to participate on the rifle team which begins December 14. If you participated in the Rifle Club last year and would like to be considered for the varsity squad this year (or have prior precision rifle experience), please e mail Coach Tinter directly – steven.tinter@apsva.us in order to be extended the opportunity to tryout. Students who have an interest in rifle but no prior experience with the rifle club should look for more information in the spring (February or later) as we do intend and hope to continue our rifle club which is meant for those who are newer to the sport of precision air rifle and safety procedures. Please sign up on Team App under YHS – rifle for more information on joining the rifle club.
